Becoming a Befriender

Make a new friend

We’re passionate about making a real difference to older people’s lives. We help older people to make new friends and feel more positive about life.

As a befriender, you’ll be matched with an older person in Islington. We expect volunteers to visit or phone our clients regularly, usually once a week for one hour. We would expect volunteers to befriend for at least a year, as many of our clients take a bit of time to get used to a new visitor and routine. The time of the visit/call doesn’t have to be the same every week – as long as this suits both the client and yourself, and the client is fully aware of arrangements. Volunteers are not expected to carry out tasks in the home but can offer information and advice about useful local services and sorting out technology.

We will require a DBS check.

We also organise a few one off events, like lunches, theatre trips and at Christmas time hamper deliveries. Its really helpful if you can lend a hand with these too, but this is very much optional to your basic commitment.
